The European Commission's Expert Group on Gender and Employment (EGGE) was set up under the European Commission's fourth action programmes on equal opportunities for women and men in the European Union to provide expert advice, research and policy evaluation to assist the Commission's Equal Opportunities Unit located in DG Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities. The EGGE network consists of independent academic experts with long standing experience of working in the field of equal opportunities and employment. There is one expert appointed per member state. The experts are appointed by the Commission. All of the experts are academicians, drawn mainly from the field of economics, sociology and management but also from other disciplines. All experts have research expertise in employment, and are committed to the advancement of equal opportunities for women and men through their research.
The network consists of experts from the 27 EU Member States and 3 EEA-EFTA countries. From 2010 the candidate countries, namely Turkey, Croatia and FYROM have also been inducted into the network. The network is managed by the Fondazione Brodolini, Rome, under the coordination of Professor Francesca Bettio.
The main annual tasks of the EGGE network are:

  • To contribute to the production of two thematic reports on some aspect of gender and employment
  • To provide an evaluation from a gender perspective of the National Reforms Programme produced by each member state
  • Assist the Commission with specific requests for information on aspects of equal opportunities and employment policy

The activities lead to the production of three national reports per year for each member state and three synthesis reports.

The Fondazione G. Brodolini was established on the 9th April 1971 and for thirty-five years has carried out research and studies into cultural trends and social changes, following a rigorous scientific and interdisciplinary approach. During nearly thirty years of activity, the Foundation has focused in particular on labour issues based around three main areas: labour economics and sociology; labour legislation; industrial relations. At present we are coordinating: two networks for the DG Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities: “Network of experts on employment and gender equality issues” and “Network of experts in gender equality, social inclusion, health and long-term care”.
